The building was commissioned and built-in 1906 as a residence for a tycoon named Yeo Wee Gark. It was designed by David Nathaniel, a popular architect at the time, and was only transformed into a hotel after the Second World War. During the Japanese Occupation of Penang, the building was used as their administrative centre. The building was designed with many of the opulence associated with the wealthy, for instance, generous open space planning and the extensive use of timber, metal, tile and glass.
A combination breakfast venue and lounge, this is the centrepiece and an extension of the Hotel’s concept, a gathering place for guests and non-guests. An inviting and exclusive space for socializing, reflection and work where guests have unlimited access to snacks and beverages available direct from the self-service counters. The intention is the creation of an intimate space with a personality where the romance of the guest's enjoyment is celebrated whilst lingering over a drink, a book, or in contemplation.
Located in the middle of the main building; this is the epicentre in which everything and everyone passes through. The airy central courtyard is atypical of colonial architecture and lines alongside the hallways that lead to the other areas of the Hotel. The restored original cast-iron columns and decorative frescos add a timeless elegance to the space which authenticates the history of the building.
A prime spot for sun-worshipping and star-gazing; the pool is inspired as a little oasis within inner George Town where guests can enjoy a leisure dip or an invigorating cardiovascular workout.
